Unboxing and first impressions of Asus Strix RX 570 4GB GDDR5

Should you go ahead and make a purchase of Asus Strix 4GB GDDR5 version or go for RX 580? Hmm. Yes, if you are casual gamer and not going to play everything at premier settings. With 1080P gaming and 1080P res, YES..!

If you are hard core gamer, big screen/monitor and also looking to add VR to your gaming arsenal, buy RX 580 of MSI (I would not recommend Asus).

4GB would be effectively suffcient. But if you need to add two more monitors or want to add VR, then I would recommend 8Gig of GDDR5.

We have made few tests with this graphics card and this one holds up pretty well. But What I have noticed is at normal usage, temperature increase is momentous and that means fans/heat dissipation isn't that great as I thought it would be. Performance wise it looks fine.

Build :
It has that cheap feel to its housing. Plastic looks flimsy and delicate. Fan design is excellent (this is subjective). PCB looks sharp and as Asus has excelled in previous editions with their component quality usage, I would bet they would excel even at this time.

Design :
They could have done justice to this graphics card by adding heat pipe to visible side of the card (and not at the board side). Plus plastic housing could have been similar to ealier strix versioning and it would have looked fantastic. (Again its subjective).
RGB lighting is not that flashy and its conservative in its nature. I would grant Asus here. And thats fine.

Now VRAM positioning and power supply, this we found little bullish. We did not get the point that this card (150W max) would be pulling power from MB and as well from SMPS. (Please watch video). May be it has some power optimization and perhaps this leads to power dissipation issue (yes even with higher fan curve config). Well, we did not like that.

Connectivity:
It has 2xDVI,1HDMI and 1 DP (1.4v). I have question on all. WHY? WHYYY? and Why?
WHY? TWO DVI?
WHYYY? WHYYY only one HDMI?
Why? Why only one DP?

Ok, now, if it fits your connectivity requirements go for it. Usually I would look for HDMI and DP combination of 5 port connectivity. Hence this makes me lean over MSI or other cards in this segment.

Overall card scores : 3 Stars over 5. If heat dissipation score was good I would not have cut 1 star. But perhaps we pushed this cad too far. Perhaps its not suppose to work hard like we made it to. But none the less heat dissipation is basic. And I would not like consumer to receive less on this for what they paid for.
