Hello everyone today we are going to take a look at How secure sockets layer SSL certificate as a more commonly known work. These Usually appear in your web browser as the Green Bar or padlock symbol when you visit a website, this indicates that the information you are transferring between your machine or mobile device and the website that you're viewing is encrypted and safe.It is fast becoming the norm in 2020 most browsers such as Chrome Firefox and Edge and Brave Now displaying warning signs if you visit a website that does not use an SSL certificate or if there's an issue with the installed certificate on that website. The purpose of these certificates is to show a trail of trust and ensure your communication with a website cannot be interrupted over the internet or the network that are connecting from, its important to understand that whilst it does not encrypt your data after it's sent to a website, it does ensure that all data transmitted between point a and b is transferred in an encrypted manner for the duration of your session so for example if you were sitting in an internet cafe with a free Wi-Fi connection and you ordered something for argument sake from Amazon.com as shown in the diagram.A nefarious person is unlikely to be able to intercept this message and even if they did manage to sniff the network traffic between point a and b the communication would be encrypted keeping it safe from prying eyes also imagine if someone was to poison your DNS lookups so everytime you typed in www.amazon.com your traffic was redirected to a dummy Amazon store with a similar look and feel, your browser would still pop up a warning sign saying that the site is not secure and they prevent them from using the same website URL but it would not be able to get a trusted certificate for the www.amazon.com domain name as they would NOT own it and be unable to prove any sort of trust, this is because the SSL certificate is signed by a trusted certificate authority such as Komodo or verisign etc.But how does this process actually work let's take a closer look, the web server owner generates a certificate request consisting of a public and private key,The public key this is then sent to a certificate authority where is signed and becomes trusted usually offer its domain ownership is validated and company and organisation ownership is evaluated in the case for extended validation certificates. The signed public key is then returned to the web server owner and it is this key that is presented to the client when people access the website in their browser and begin the initial SSL handshake for encryption, the private key is never shared with anyone but it is used to decrypt messages that have been encrypted with the web servers public key, now for the second Step of the process when a client visits the web server in this case amazon.com the client browser automatically downloads the now signed and trusted public key on to the local users machine, the PC then in turn generates and new symmetrical key to be used for the browser session, this key is encrypted with the public key of the Amazon web server, the newly encrypted symmetric key is then sent back to the Amazon website where is decrypted with the Amazon web server private key now both servers have a copy of the new symmetrical key which provides for bi-directional encryption for the duration of the web browsing session over SSL, it is this process that occurs automatically every time you open a browser and visit an SSL based web server or site that's it thanks for watching please remember to like and subscribe
