Nottinghamshire Police have a lot of catching up todo when just up the road West Midland Police are leading the way in their #OpClosePass (now being rolled out to 16 other police forces).

This footage was taken with my GoPro on my regular commute from one side of Nottingham city to the other. (Mansfield Rd, Nottingham NG1 3FR). I'm by no means a lycra lout riding my (former Royal Mail) Pashley Mailstar (27kg) and dressed in jeans and hi-viz.

The bus driver and I made eye contact at the lights before we set off. He was only in lane 2 because we both knew that lane 1 was going to be full of parked cars. As the lanes started to merge he makes no attempt to ease off and let me carry on in front and brings his bus within inches of my handlebars. The bus actually brushed past my elbow and caused me to take my right hand off the handlebars I didn't dare brake one handed as the heavy bike needs two hands to keep it straight whilst stopping. I just let the bike roll along downhill hoping that the bus wasn't going to pull over any further and desperately concentrating on keeping the bike heading in a straight line.

When I get really stressed I seem to switch into super polite mode which makes my interaction with the driver almost comical as he's just almost taken me out.

A later check on Twitter highlighted another complaint to Trentburton bus company. Checking with them they confirmed that the same bus had failed to stop to pick them up. It seems the driver was in a rush that evening.

That night I contacted Trentbarton and continued the conversation with them over the next few days. Whilst their contact centre seemed friendly and concerned I defiantly got the feeling I was being fobbed off and that no investigation was taking place. Following their advice I tried to get Nottinghamshire Police involved but without taking a statement, watching the footage or asking if there were any witnesses they decided that there would be no further Police involvement.

I'm posting this video on YouTube knowing that nothing more will come from this incident but in the hope that it will highlight how not all police forces are as good as West Midlands Police (#OpClosePass) or Northumbria Police (now accepting helmet camera footage online).

Hi XXXXXX, as per my message yesterday, I passed this on to the General Manager for her comment and consideration. She has advised that the bus doesn't deviate from his lane, and if your lane is impeded it would perhaps be prudent to wait until lane two was clear. Equally, our driver could have read the road ahead, seen you and the parked cars and slowed to allow you into the second lane for this manoeuvre. She will be speaking to the driver, and showing him the footage so that he can be aware of the situation and hopefully will make better decisions in reading the road ahead.
We are truly sorry for any distress caused, it did look very close, though in the drivers defence, he did not appear to move across his lane, but as stated above, he could have read the road ahead better, and thank you for letting us know about this incident. ~XXX


Nottinghamshire Police Incident number 000661-27022017
In relation to our earlier telephone conversation I have since spoke to my Sergeant about this incident. He has stated that due to the fact that you wasn't hit by the bus, haven't got any injuries and that there are no independent witnesses to it then there will be no further Police involvement. I appreciate that you have footage however without any witnesses then we cannot take this further. I would suggest you get in touch with the bus company again and see if they will look into it.
