ZIPPERING: (0:35)
Zippering is one of the most common problems with loop-pile carpet.
Zippering occurs in a loop pile carpet in which tufts are pulled from the backing resulting in long, lengthwise pulls out of the carpet. This happens when someone pulls a loose tuft or a vacuum cleaner grabs a loose tuft and pulls out the entire length of tufts.

RIPPLING: (1:20)
Rippling or buckling of carpet is common after cleaning carpet, especially if the carpet was not properly installed by being power-stretched instead of being knee-kicked in.

DELAMINATION: (2:39)
Delamination occurs when the carpet backing comes apart. Carpet delamination is the separation of the secondary backing from the primary backing of the carpet. The secondary backing is any material laminated with latex to the primary backing in a “marriage roller” for dimensional stability while locking individual tufts in place. The primary backing is the material in which the carpet fiber is tufted. Backing adhesion is the amount of force required to delaminate or separate the primary and secondary backings.

CARPET ROLL CRUSH:
Carpet Roll Crush marks appear as wide bands across the carpet width and are easily identified since they are not evenly spaced but are progressively spaced closer as the carpet roll gets closer to the center.

SHADING, WATERMARKING, PILE REVERSAL, POOLING:
Shading is an apparent change of color in carpet pile caused as light is reflected in different ways when pile fibers are bent. This is also called “Pooling” or “Watermarking” or “Pile reversal”. The condition is normally permanent.
Pile reversal can also be caused by seaming. Always seam with the direction of the nap of the carpet to prevent pile reversal. Pile reversing can create a different light reflection, making the seam appear discolored. After installation, shaded areas may appear looking like a water spill - this is why this is called “water pooling”
