The Armstrong Trail follows an old railroad bed along the Allegheny River in western Pennsylvania. At the present, it is a hair over 50 miles long, but may be extended in the future.
It will be part of the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail, if it is ever completed.

Today's section is towards the north end, and features some fascinating historical structures, including a coaling tower and a tunnel. The tower was used to load coal into the locomotives as fuel for their steam engines. The tunnel was originally built to avoid the sharp turns around Brady's Bend and it also saved 5.36 miles from long journeys. It has been recently refurbished and re-opened. The lighting system inside appears to be solar powered. If one enters the tunnel without recent passages, the lights will come on one by one as you walk through.

Needless to say, the scenery along the river is fantastic ...
