Born Ardis Ankerson on September 29, 1915, on the island of Negros in the Philippine Islands to Swedish parents, her father, Otto Peter Ankerson, managed a sugar plantation. After her mother’s death in 1925, Ardis and her sister Ruth were sent to Brent School in Baguio. The sisters later moved to the United States, where Ardis completed high school in San Antonio, Texas. From 1933 to 1935, she attended Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman’s University), where she was named Freshman Class Beauty in 1934.
She began her film career under the name Ardis Gaines in Wives of Tomorrow (1937), but adopted her screen name—Brenda Marshall—with her role in Espionage Agent (1939). Her breakout performance came the following year as Doña Maria opposite Errol Flynn in The Sea Hawk (1940). She went on to star alongside James Cagney in Captains of the Clouds (1942) and appeared in The Constant Nymph (1943).
Marshall's later roles included Strange Impersonation (1946), Whispering Smith (1948), and her final credited film appearance in The Iroquois, Trail (1950). In 1955, she made a cameo as herself—credited as Mrs. William Holden—on the popular television series I Love Lucy, in the episode titled “The Fashion Show.”
Brenda Marshall married actor Richard Gaines in 1936, and the couple had one daughter, Virginia Gaines, born in 1937. They divorced in 1940. On July 12, 1941, she married actor William Holden, who adopted Virginia as his own. Together, they had two sons: Peter Westfield "West" Holden, born on November 17, 1943, and Scott Porter Holden, born on May 2, 1946. The marriage was marked by several separations before ultimately ending in divorce in 1971. Following the divorce, Marshall relocated to Palm Springs, California.
