This is very rare footage of the Turkestan Ground-Jay (Podoces panderi). To put this into perspective, there are three videos on YouTube of this species!

This video is the fourth video.

There are several reasons for this:

1. These Ground-Jays only live in parts of Uzbekistan, where we saw this one, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.

2. Secondly, they live in deserts, like the Kyzyl-Kum Desert, with sparse shrubbery and sand dunes, difficult for humans to traverse.

3. Then there is habitat loss. People used canals to divert river water from the Aral Sea so they could grow cotton and other crops. This altered the Ground-Jay’s habitat and cause a population decline.
