The Dream Chaser spaceplane has been in the works for over twenty years. It was first introduced back in 2004, and since then, it has received a large amount of funding from the United States government. Yet, after all these years, this mini space shuttle still has not flown to space. Many people are now wondering what has caused such a long delay. Why has it taken this long, and will we ever see it take off?
NASA just shared an update on Dream Chaser, explaining why it still hasn’t launched.
Dream Chaser is being built by Sierra Space, but its launch schedule has stayed uncertain for years. What’s strange is how a small spaceplane like this has taken over 20 years to develop. The Dream Chaser project started back in 2004 with a company named SpaceDev. Four years later, joined forces with Sierra Nevada Corporation, and that’s when real progress on the spaceplane began.
By 2010, the project got its first NASA contract through the Commercial Crew Program, which helped improve its design. But Dream Chaser wasn’t selected to fly astronauts. Instead, it was given a new role.
NASA later awarded Sierra Nevada a contract under the Commercial Resupply Services program to send cargo to the ISS. At least six Dream Chaser flights were ordered for this job.
One of those missions is a demonstration flight called Space Station Cargo Demo 1. It would be the first time Dream Chaser flies to space. This mission was first expected to happen in 2021. But that date has changed many times. Right now, the earliest possible launch date is sometime in 2025. And we are already halfway through 2025, yet there is still no launch.
This long silence has made many fans lose interest or grow frustrated. Still, people working on the project say it is not easy to build something like Dream Chaser. Dana Wigel, a program manager at NASA, said that Sierra Space is working hard, but building a spaceplane is very complex.
