One of Peter’s main research interests over the past 30 years, outside his work in head and neck cancer, is in early human evolution and the controversial ‘Aquatic’ or ‘Waterside’ theory of evolution from our ape ancestors. Since 1992, when he published his first paper on ‘The paranasal sinuses and other enigmas, an aquatic evolutionary theory’, he has been involved in 3 different programmes with Sir David Attenborough, including 2 international conferences and the recent BBC Radio 4 series on the controversial subject of the ‘Waterside Ape’ Theory.
He was recently awarded the prestigious Arris and Gale Lecture for 2017 from the Royal College of Surgeons (dating from 1645) for this research and he has recently finished writing a book: “The Waterside Ape – An Alternative History of Human Evolution” which was published in 2019.
