India’s largest & most renowned dairy brand, The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), popularly known as Amul increased its milk prices on 2nd June 2024, one day after the elections in India ended.

Amul increased the milk rates by ₹1 per half litre and ₹2 per litre in all variants of its packed milk category.
With this hike, Amul Gold and Amul Taaza's prices will be ₹2 more per 1 litre, Amul Buffalo Milk by ₹3 per 1 litre and the rest by ₹1 per 1 litre.

The new prices have been implemented from today i.e 3nd June 2024 in all markets across India with immediate effect.

GCMMF announced the hike in an official statement on 2nd June 2024. The statement also read that the increase of ₹2 per litre translates to a 3-4% increase on MRP which is much lower than average of food inflation.

It also reminded people that Amul had not increased the prices of Fresh Pouch milk in major markets since February 2023.

No changes have been made in the Sagar Skimmed Milk category. They will be sold at the same MRP rates. The price of curd has also been increased.

According to the statement, Amul has increased the price hike to keep up with the overall cost of operation and production of milk.

Along with the reason for this price hike, Amul also mentioned that its member unions have also increased farmers’ prices by 6-8% over the last year in the statement.

According to the reports, Amul has a policy that passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to milk producers. GCMMF’s Managing Director Jayen Mehta also said that the hike is necessary to compensate farmers for the increased cost of production.

Therefore, the statement mentioned that Amul hopes to sustain remunerative (high-paying) milk prices to milk producers to encourage them for higher milk production.
