Judy Heumann, a renowned activist who fought for the rights of disabled people, died at age 75 on March 4. Heumann, who was known as the ‘mother of the disability rights movement,’ contracted polio as a child and spent the majority of her life advocating for legislative changes in the U.S. Here she is at a hearing in 1988 speaking on discrimination on the basis of disability.
