Summary:

It's easy to get caught up with the similarities and differences with the FX3's cousin the a7S III. After all, the cameras share many similarities, but what seems like an inconsequential difference to the amateur, can truly make all the difference to professionals.

About Hot Rod's Public Videos:

We currently make only two types of public technology videos:

New Technology Breakdown - These are specification based and don't offer much else except perhaps why the technology is notable.

Technical Why Videos (like this one) - We like to focus on the "why." As in why would you choose this camera over another? Why is this technology special? Why you should consider this?

We strive to always formulate performance conclusions based on the combination of lab and subjective testing. Both lab tests and subjective test are informative, but not always fun to watch. Most public tests you'll find (at least on-line) only really engage in one kind of testing or the other. You need both to get the complete story of any imaging technology. It was true in the era when imaging was entirely photo-chemical, just as it is true today.

Shooting pretty pictures is wonderful, but also subjective. Shooting charts is great and on face value more scientifically informative. Unfortunately, the rub is that conclusions reached from either pretty pictures or charts are meaningless unless the person doing the evaluation has access to multiple points of reference, and understands how to analyze the results, competently. There are several factors that can throw off the results of lab tests. But if you are approaching it scientifically, you can confirm your findings, and so can anyone else. Without shooting a test to confirm your results you literally miss about half the story.

We've attempted to include a taste of this kind of testing we do in this video. This is still a work in progress. We want to make our videos palatable (as much as possible) to a general audience, but doing so potentially minimized the scientific effort applied. We also want to give some sample images to the hardcore imaging and technical geeks out there, but the further we go in that direction we risk alienating the much larger lay audience. So at the risk of making no one happy please hang in there with us as we attempt to find the proper balance.
