President Bola Tinubu has permanently scrapped the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida confirmed that the levy, which was first suspended in July 2023, has now been abolished under new laws. The move follows strong opposition from telecom operators who warned it would drive up costs and disrupt services. The decision comes months after a fresh debate in the National Assembly over reinstating the tax alongside levies on gaming and betting.
