This is a demonstration of the four most common modes encountered in old time and traditional American music--Ionian (major), Mixolydian, Dorian ("mountain minor") and Aeolian (minor). Taken in this order, the modes becomes progressively more minor/darker. I play Mississippi Sawyer (Key of C, Double C tuning--gCGCD), going through this progression of modes so that you can hear the differences and the changes.

Relative to the scale for the Ionian (major) mode:
the 7th note of the scale is flattened to create the Mixolydian mode/scale
the 3rd & 7th notes of the scale are flattened to create the Dorian mode/scale
the 3rd, 6th, and 7th notes of the scale are flattened to create the Aeolian mode/scale

These relationships apply no matter what key you are in.

In traditional music, the mode can be ambiguous because the full scale may not be played. Also, traditional music often changes mode within in a melody. Regardless, developing an ear for these modes will help you figure out how to play a tune, and how to play on the fly.
