Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2018 Ram 2500, we're gonna be checking out the CURT Gooseneck Kit for those trucks that have the OEM prep package. So this kit right here, it's gonna come with everything you need to safely hook up to your gooseneck trailer. And these OEM prep packages are awesome. Ram really did think things through when making these trucks and they make it super easy to use a gooseneck or even a 5th wheel hitch for that matter. Essentially, they just drop right into place.

So it doesn't take hardly any time at all to either put in or take out. And why don't we kinda check out and see how it actually works. So way the ball works, super easy, you're gonna have a lever up here. And when you flipped that up and rotate it about a quarter turn, and that's gonna allow you to pull it out. And same deal with it going in.

We'll rotate that, that'll lock it in, and then the ball's not gonna go anywhere. And of course when your trailer's on it, there's no way this latch is gonna get pulled up and move and become disconnected. So that's nice there. The latch mechanism, to be honest with you, I'm not super crazy about it. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.

To me, it just seems like if you left this in here for awhile, you might start getting some grease caked up in there and it might be a little difficult to move around. That's kinda just my thought on it. Not the end of the world though, by any means. And one thing I do really like actually about this particular setup is the safety chain openings there. So these are really big and thin enough to get just about any size hook around it.

We've run into some kits in the past where the safety chain openings are just so wide and just kinda odd that you really can't get any common size hooks on them. So it's kind of defeats the point of them if you've got to go through a bunch of trouble to make it work. And that's not the case with these. Just about any size hook, it's gonna go right around there. Essentially, their just gonna drop into. pull out the pin, and you'll just rotate that a quarter turn or so and it'll pull right out. Same deal going in, lock it in. That's really all there is to it. Something I do wanna bring up that it sounds like some people have experienced is the fact that sometimes it's ball might get stuck in there. Now it doesn't seem like it happens if you leave it in there for a short period of time, but leaving this thing in here for months or a long period of time and the weather, it sounds like sometimes they wanna get stuck in there and people have a hard time getting them out. So if it we're me knowing that, if I didn't use this daily or regularly, I would probably just pull it out when I'm done with it, just to avoid that situation. And they'd make it convenient enough to do it, so why not You actually get this little carrying case and it's pretty nice setup, actually. It almost fancy like a drill case, but if it we're me, I would pull this out and just store everything in here. And it's small enough, where you can actually keep it under the seat of your truck or I mean, even inside the bed, if you have a terminal covers or something like that, or you feel comfortable doing that. But the other safety chain opening will go here and your instructions and everything else. And then they actually give you a cover, a cap that can go in this hole and try to help keep everything protected. Now I know from past experience, our customer here today don't have the OEM covers, but I do know from past experience that the OEM cover does not go in place with the CURT one inside there. So it's either one or the other, but again, a good backup to have if you ended up misplacing the OEM one, or lose this one, but save the OEM, at least you has something that can still cover up the hole here in you bed. One of the things that does kinda separate this kit from some of the others is the weight capacity. So it's gonna have a 38,000 pound maximum gross trailer weight rating. So that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pulling on the ball. And generally speaking, most goosenecks are rated for 30,000. So you definitely get some more weight capacity there. And even if you're not hauling that much weight, it gives you a little more peace of mind knowing you've got some extra heavy duty and give yourself a really good solid connection point, which is important.
