VALUE-BASED PROCUREMENT – Assessing economic, social and environmental impacts of municipal food procurement policies: The role of participatory action research – 16 Oct 2025

A parallel session promoted by Cornell University (‪@Cornell‬) and City Food Policy, as part of the MUFPP Global Forum 2025 (13–17 October, Milan).

Many MUFPP cities adopt food policies to support sustainability and social protection, such as promoting nutritious local foods from smallholders, strengthening urban-rural linkages, protecting land, biodiversity, and ecosystems, and supporting livelihoods. This interactive session explores cities’ public food procurement goals and implementation strategies. After a brief introduction to the City Food Policy project, elected cities discuss their measurable goals and strategies in small groups, considering which stakeholders are impacted and what cities need to know to assess policy effectiveness. The session concludes with a town hall-style report on key insights, bringing together cities with varying levels of experience and guidance from supporting organizations to maximize the impact of procurement practices.
