Robbie is joining CapitaLiterature 2022 Writing to Save the World with a virtual talk on writing about the natural world while climate change rages and how fiction can change the way we feel about the environment.

His debut novel, Flames (2018), is a tale of grief and love with touches of magical realism, and won him the Margaret Scott Prize and the Tasmanian Premier’s Literary Prize. His follow-up, The Rain Heron (2020), is about a mythical bird creature than can bring rain, the soldiers who want to capture it, and the human need to control and subdue the natural world. It won the Age Book of the Year award.

All of his novels are deeply connected to nature and the complexity of human existence. His darkly lyrical prose explores themes of trauma and redemption, but he sets his stories in beautiful semi-mythical worlds in an attempt to convey the sublime power of nature. “I hope to present the natural world in a way that feels as fantastic as it really is”, says Robbie.
Joining him as discussion moderator is Bulgarian poet Albena Todorova, author of three books of poetry, whose recent works in English translation appear in Cordite and Ninth Letter.

The event is part of the Cultural Calendar of Sofia Municipality.
