In the summer of 1963, 17-year-old Frances Houseman, known to everyone as "Baby," spends the vacations with her upper-middle-class parents and her sister Lisa at Kellerman's resort in the Catskill Mountains. There she meets Johnny Castle, a dance instructor from the lower class. When she goes to a hotel employee's party one night without permission, Baby and Johnny become close.
