Bob Knight's passing has rocked the sports world. Knight was a talented and tempestuous coach who won three national championships with Indiana and was the scowling face of college basketball for decades. He was 83.

The news was announced on social media by Knight's family on Wednesday night. He'd been unwell for years and finally ended himself in the hospital in April.

According to the statement, Coach Bob Knight passed away in his Bloomington home surrounded by his loved ones. "We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as Coach requested a private family gathering, which is being honored."Knight was one of the most polarizing characters in sports after retiring after 42 years as a coach at Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech, where he had a combined 902 wins. He also directed the winning U.S. Olympic team of 1984.To celebrate his 880th victory as a Division I men's coach, the legend ignored public opinion and played "My Way" by Frank Sinatra.

Named "The General," he was let off from his employment at Indiana in the year 2000 due to his explosive temper. They say he threw a chair across the court, attacked a police officer in Puerto Rico, and wrapped his hands around the neck of a player.

His critics frequently expressed their outrage over his actions, yet he had many fans. Knight also had this going for him: while coaching during a period of widespread rule-breaking, he was never punished with a severe NCAA violation, and he was proud of his team's exceptional graduation record. He had previously requested that his beginning salary at Indiana University be set at no more than that of his colleagues. When he worked at Texas Tech, he occasionally returned his paychecks because he didn't think he deserved them.

Knight expected nothing less than perfection from his players in the classroom and on the court. He always abided by NCAA rules, even when he disagreed with them, and he never backed down from a battle, declaring he was willing to die for his beliefs.

Although he possessed a solid record, tactical intelligence, originality, and passion for the game, these qualities were sometimes overshadowed by his attitude and theatrical antics, much to the chagrin of his players.

Legendary Steve Alford, captain of Knight's 1987 national championship team, said of Knight, "He changed basketball in this state—the way you compete, the way you win."It started at Indiana, but he really altered college basketball. The motion offense is widely practiced all around the world.

The iconic and divisive coach took great pride in filling his best teams with players who consistently performed at a high level. He was intimidating to work for because of his lofty stature and unwavering principles. With four championships (one as a player at Ohio State) and the most wins in the history of Division I men's basketball, Knight retired in 2008. He coached greats like Mike Krzyzewski, Isaac Thomas, and Michael Jordan. Alford, Lawrence Frank, Keith Smart, Randy Wittman, and the current coach of Indiana, Mike Woodson, are all direct descendants of Knight, as is Krzyzewski, who broke Knight's record for wins.

"We lost one of the greatest coaches in basketball history today," Krzyzewski said. It's clear that he was one of a kind. His impact as a recruiter, coach, and mentor on my life and career is immense. Our entire family is heartbroken at this terrible loss to our sport.

On October 25, 1940, Robert Montgomery Knight was born in Massillon, Ohio. Since Knight's father worked for the railroad, his mother was a key presence in his life from an early age.
