Heterogeneities at various measurement scales, nano scale (petrographic analysis), micro scale (Digital Rock, core analysis), bedding scale (core analysis & testing) and reservoir scale (3D and Time Lapsed/ 4D seismic) often exist depending on depositional environment and rock-fluid interaction. Maximizing recovery from petroleum reservoirs is dependent on reservoir properties, their variabilities and heterogeneities. Reservoir characterization is identification, quantification and integration of reservoir properties and their uncertainties as a function of space. Characterization of heterogeneities are essential for optimizing various recovery processes. In this presentation, examples of various heterogeneities and their impact on gravity drainage gas injection in a sandstone reservoir and natural waterflood in a carbonate reservoir are demonstrated.


Bio:
Mehdi (Matt) Honarpour is a Principal Reservoir Engineer at BHP corporation in Houston for the past 7 years. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of rock-fluid interaction and integration, Special core analysis, miscible CO2 process and scale-up 0f multiphase flow properties. Honarpour was with Hess Corporation for 6 years, as a Global Advisor, Mobil E&P Technical Center and ExxonMobil Upstream Research as a senior engineering advisor for 18 years. He was a project manager for Integrated Reservoir Characterization and Roc-Fluid Interaction at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute, Before that petroleum engineering professor at Montana Tech, at the University of Montana.
Honarpour was the 1988 Society of Core Analysts (SCA) president and he was awarded the SCA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. Honarpour received Society of Petroleum Engineers SPE Formation Evaluation Award in 2011. He has authored and coauthored more than 100 technical papers and three books in reservoir engineering, reservoir characterization and relative permeability.
Honarpour is a Professional Engineer and earned his BS, MS and PhD degrees from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly UMR), all in petroleum engineering.
