This presentation will widen your lens on how much support foster parents (also known as resource parents) and premature babies need in order to thrive. Establishing an early secure attachment is critical to all children, especially premature babies. In the United States, 1 and 10 children are born before gestational age. This statistic might lead to the likelihood a foster parent may care for a premature baby. Infants born before 37 weeks might possibly experience cognitive delays, distress, low birth weight, sensitivity to touch and sound, and retinopathy. Foster parents who engage in kangaroo care, infant massage, and other forms of nurturing touch aid infants to feel secure knowing they have someone to rely on during a difficult transitional period. Foster parents play a remarkable role in caring for a child while a decision is made to reunify back with the biological parent or to be permanently adopted. A growing number of the LGBTQ+ community are foster and adoptive parents. However, LGBTQ+ Foster parents may experience race, gender, and/or marital status discrimination. This will hinder LGBTQ+ foster parents who
want to provide care and support. Additional training for foster care agencies is needed to be culturally sensitive working with all types of individuals.
