We took the opportunity to take a flight over the Nazca lines in southern Peru. The flight took off from the Nazca airport, and did a circuit around the region showing off a few of the glyphs and line art established by the Nazca peoples over a thousand years ago.

The glyphs include both geometric shapes, as well as animal and humanoid forms. The art is too large to see from standing on the ground, but can be seen from aircraft, Google maps views, or local mountains.

I did my best to identify the various glyphs based on the limited information I had. Where appropriate I play a second zoomed in pass to better see the glyph on smaller screens. I tried not to editorialize the names, but couldn't find sources on a few of them.

Lots of theories abound about why the Nazca made so many lines. To date over a thousand have been identified by scanning satellite information. They have stood the test of time due to the unique conditions of the Nazca desert. Several theories exist but as we have no written history from the Nazca people, it still is a mystery. I like to think we are looking at the remnants of a thousand years of ancient Burning Man festivals, but it's probably a mixture of religious and agriculturally significant symbolism.

At the time of our flight it cost approximately $100 USD to take the flight inclusive of airport fees, however be warned that operators will charge you more if you weigh more than 90kg or 200lbs. We haggled a bit and ended up paying $140 USD each as we are both taller heavier people.

Be warned the flight is incredibly difficult if you are prone to motion sickness. We were flying in the morning on a calm day but the desert thermals and the pilot's banking to point the wing at the various glyphs make for a wild ride. There is a tower on a highway pictured in the latter half of the video, it lets you see some of the lines with more solid footing.
