Throughout this video we’ll go step-by-step through the process of shorting stock on the ThinkorSwim platform. There’s no special button you need to hit. You simply need to put in a sell order on a stock you don’t currently own. This will automatically be a short order. It’s all automatic, but what you’re essentially doing is borrowing shares from TD Ameritrade, then immediately selling those shares. Later down the line you’ll simply need to buy back those shares to cover the position. So remember, you sell to open. Then you buy back those shares to close. You then get to keep the difference.
