Rising from the Hampshire shoreline on the edge of the Solent, Fort Gilkicker stands as a monumental relic of Britain’s coastal defences. Located at the southeastern tip of Gosport, this 19th - century fortification was built in 1863 to protect Portsmouth Harbour from naval assault. Its sweeping semicircular structure once bristled with guns, designed to guard the nation during a time of rising military tension.

Today, the fort lies in a state of partial disrepair - caught between its historic past and an uncertain future. Surrounded by fencing and the remnants of stalled construction, Fort Gilkicker has long been earmarked for redevelopment. The current plan? To transform this weatherworn stronghold in to luxury seafront apartments, blending history and high-end living. Yet progress has been slow, and nature continues to reclaim the stone and brick.
