True story:
In 2005, a group of art dealers bought a 15th-century painting in very poor condition. It appeared to be a cheap replica, a copy. They purchased it for $1,175, which was considered cheap in the art world. The painting was called the Salvator Mundi.
But these dealers noticed something special about it. They brought it to an art restorer, and over the next decade, they worked on removing hundreds of years of grime, dirt, overpainting, and canvas damage. As the restorer carefully stripped away all the layers, unbelievable brushstrokes and a high level of mastery started to emerge.
The more they worked on it, the clearer it became that this was actually a masterpiece. It was revealed that this painting was truly a work of art.
Historians from around the world were flown in to verify what they were seeing. One historian after another confirmed, “This looks like the work of the master. This looks like a Da Vinci.”
What they had found was the lost Leonardo Da Vinci painting of Jesus Christ. As the restoration continued, the painting's true value and beauty became evident. After many years of work, it was reframed and displayed at the National Gallery in London, where thousands of people came to see this incredible artwork—worth nothing when it was first found.
Eventually, it was sold at auction for a staggering $430 million, making it the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold in human history.
What’s interesting is that no one saw its value at first. It wasn’t until the painting was restored that its true beauty was revealed. It wasn’t until the layers of grime and dirt were removed that the masterpiece underneath was uncovered.
I'm here to tell you today that God doesn’t look at the outward appearance—He looks at the heart. He can see through the layers of your sin, your past, your failures, and your flaws. If you allow the hand of the Master, He will begin to restore you to His original intent for you.
If you allow Him to remove those layers through worship, reading the Word, and gathering with His people, He will keep washing and cleansing you. Suddenly, His hand will be revealed in your life. People will look at you and ask, “Is this the same person?” But it’s God who sees what’s going on inside.
When religion just sees a sinner, God sees a son. He sees a daughter. He sees majesty. He sees a masterpiece in your life. He will reframe you. He will restore you.
One day, He will reveal you and say, “This is my son. This is my daughter, in whom I am well pleased.”
The good news of grace is that it works to restore your life.
