PETITA - DORES d’ALMA - PENSAMENTO:
In this famous and old song, some doubts still persist and need to be clarified due to a series of factors. The first who recorded this song was the singer Mario Pinheiro. One of the most famous and important Brazilian opera singers from late 1890’s and early 1900’s, Mario Pinheiro recorded many albums at the beginning of the 20-th century, singing and accompanying himself on the guitar. He released a solo guitar record, Victor 98.989, with the song Petita (matrix B-9306), and according to the Discography of American Historical Recordings, the song was recorded on June 7, 1910. This music is important for the Brazilian guitarists for a historical reason: the 78-RPM recording of the composer himself (despite he’s a singer). Also, it’s the very oldest recording of a solo guitar music made by a Brazilian musician. It was not recorded in Brazil, actually, but in the United States, though the artist was Brazilian. Only two years later (in 1912), Americo Jacomino Canhoto (from Sao Paulo) did the first guitar solo recordings INSIDE Brazil. Advancing in the time, the story can be told as being almost true, when Quincas Laranjeiras heard Mario Pinheiro's recording around 1925 or a little earlier he decided to make his arrangement and left it in manuscript for posterity. In fact, he composed and added only the third part. The piece was published by AS Guitar Edition in 2019. Our edition is different from the score that circulates on the Internet. Our version was transcribed by Edmar Fenicio from the old recording of Antonio Rebello who was a student of Laranjeiras and who played a version without the third part (probably Laranjeiras composed it later). It was based on the guitar version on Pinheiro himself.
So, we see that the song PETITA of Mario Pinheiro who was the first performer of the song (and we are not absolutely sure if he was the author of the music) was spread as DORES d’ALMA by Quincas Laranjeiras and also as PENSAMENTO by Canhoto.
