Need to hang something really heavy like a TV or something that needs to be able to hold a lot of weight like floating shelves? You’re gonna need to use a stud finder. And in the video above, we’re gonna show you how — and don’t worry, we’ll spare you the lame, sweaty dad jokes about stud finders … trust us.
Watch our helpful DIY how-to video and you’ll see just how simple it is to use a stud finder to pinpoint secure spots behind your drywall to anchor to. It’s as easy as following the lights and beeps!
1. First, find a stud finder which you can get at any local hardware store, big box home improvement store or world-dominating online marketplace.
2. Now, hold the stud finder up, place it gently against the wall and hold down the button. Different brands and models will have different configurations and features, but on the one we show you in the video, the activation button is on the side.
3. Hold down the button. The green light here shows that the stud finder is activated and the red light is the signal that you’ve located a stud. Both lights come on upon pressing the button down, but then you have to wait for the red light to turn off.
4. Keeping contact with the wall, slide the stud finder across the surface of the wall. When you see that red light come on, that’s your signal you’ve found a stud.
5. Keep moving it across the stud and keep an eye on how long the red light stays on before turning off once you’ve passed the stud.
6. Then, take a second pass coming the opposite direction, again paying attention to when the red light turns on and off again. This will help give you an idea of where the middle of the stud is, which is gonna be your sweet spot when you go to drill into it for whatever you’re hanging on the wall.
7. Mark the spot lightly with a pencil.
