A typical light source in 3D computer graphics is pointing into one or several directions at a certain intensity. If you tweak a, say, spot light's parameters you can achieve amazing effects.

Physical lights work the other way round: You don't start with a default light and change parameters. Instead you load an IES file into Arnold's Photometric Light. I demonstrate this process with four different IES descriptions, two from Osram, two from Philips. There are hundreds, if not thousands more out there. Just search the web for "IES light download" or "IES illumination zip".
