There is a lot of confusion about Talalay latex vs. Dunlop Latex and Natural Latex vs. Synthetic Latex. We will distinguish the differences and tell you what is really the best for a mattress.

Talalay and Dunlop or both different ways to form the latex into solid foam. Dunlop is the primitive or original method and Talalay is the more modern and technologically advanced method. Talalay uses vaccum and flash freezing and this allows the latex to be more consistent. This consistency is important for production purposes because it allows the manufacturer to produce the exact firmnesses in the exact quantities it wants and needs. Whereas, with the Dunlop process, a producer of the foam must produce more than the desired amount in order to get the firmnesses desired. And each piece has to be measured because the finished product might be firmer or softer than originally shooting for. So it is easy to see the benefits of Talalay over Dunlop from a producer's perspective.

However, since the Talalay method is more involved, it is thus more expensive. And as a result, in order to bring down the price of Talalay, producers almost always use synthetic latex in the Talalay process since synthetic latex is cheaper than the actual rubber from the tree.

Which brings me to the next issue, natural latex vs. synthetic latex. Synthetic latex is as the name implies or indicates. It is a synthesis of natural rubber, not actually natural rubber and is actually made from petroleum. It's real name is styrene butadiene or SBR. SBR is not as durable as all natural latex for cushioning purposes. Therefore, you want an all natural latex rubber mattress, not a synthetic rubber mattress.

Most all mattress companies that use Talalay latex will call it natural because it has some natural in it, but this does not mean it is all natural. The only way to know you are getting real rubber foam is to buy it with the GOLS certification. No Talalay latex can or ever will be GOLS certified.
