JOB MARKET REPORT. TRENDS, DATA & ANALYSIS IN BELGIUM

Belgium's labor market is currently experiencing significant challenges, marked by a high incidence of talent shortages. Recent data indicates that 80% of Belgian employers are struggling to fill vacancies, with 17% reporting substantial difficulties in finding suitable candidates. This represents a 4% increase in talent scarcity compared to the previous year, positioning Belgium above the global average of 77% and ranking it among the top seven European countries most affected by this issue.

The technology sector is particularly impacted, with 86% of employers in this field reporting challenges in recruiting qualified professionals. Other sectors facing significant recruitment difficulties include consumer goods and services, energy and utilities, healthcare and life sciences, and transport, logistics, and automotive, each with 82% or more of employers experiencing hiring challenges.

In response to these talent shortages, Belgian employers are increasingly seeking candidates with specific hard and soft skills. The most in-demand hard skills include IT and data management, engineering, operations and logistics, sales and marketing, and manufacturing and production. Concurrently, soft skills such as reliability and self-discipline, resilience and adaptability, initiative-taking, reasoning and problem-solving, and active learning and curiosity are highly sought after.

Despite these challenges, there is a sense of cautious optimism among Belgian employers. Surveys reveal that 71% of employers plan to recruit in the near future, with 66% intending to offer salary increases to attract and retain talent. However, with 57% of professionals considering a job change, primarily due to salary expectations and growth prospects, employers must focus on talent development, upskilling, and addressing employee expectations to bridge the existing 'expectation gap' in the labor market.
