The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a four-crew, twin-engine turbofan-powered jet aircraft designed and produced by the American aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Corporation. Because of its characteristic sound, it was nicknamed the "War Hoover" after the vacuum cleaner brand.
The S-3 was developed in response to the VSX program conducted by the U.S. Navy (USN) to get a successor anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft to the ageing Grumman S-2 Tracker. It was designed to be a carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, long-range, multi-mission aircraft.
Lockheed aircraft 160131 was manufactured originally as an S-3A, later converted to an S-3B. It was assigned to VS-21"Fighting Redtails". On July 4, 1950 it was the first carrier-based squadron to leave for the Korean War. In 1974 VS-21 was the first squadron to receive the Lockheed S-3A Viking and in April 1991 the first Pacific Fleet squadron to get the upgraded S-3B. August 1991 saw VS-21 join CVW-5 at NAF Atsugi, Japan and deployed on USS Independence until 1995. 160131 was sent TO AMARC on May 26, 2004.

Seen here is the Lockheed S-3B Viking from the US Navy VS-21 Fighting Redtails, NF700, USS Independence, from the 1990s in 1/72nd scale diecast by Hobby Master. It's a very well-made model of this American Navy anti shipping aircraft.
