(4 Jul 2015) Dozens of people protested in Manila on Saturday against the US government and urged Washington to withdraw their troops from the Philippines.
The Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement, signed between Philippine and US officials in 2014, allows more access for US troops, ships and aircraft to be temporarily stationed in selected Philippine military camps.
The security accord is being seen as a counterweight to China which has a territorial dispute with the Philippines in the South China Sea.
Protesters said that the accord does not benefit the Philippines and is detrimental to its sovereignty.
The protest was held on the 4th of July, when Americans celebrate Independence Day and Filipinos celebrate Filipino-American friendship day.
But one protester in Manila said that there was "nothing really friendly about the relationship between the US governments and the Philippines", as Washington "continues to oppress the Filipino people".
