This job takes us to a rental property where the tenants told me the yard has been like this since the day they moved in. They had asked the real estate about getting it cleaned up beforehand but were told they had to take the property as it was.

The tenants are immigrants and said they’ve been too nervous to go out into the yard because of snakes and spiders — which, to be fair, is a pretty reasonable fear in Australia. They even told me they haven’t ventured out to the letterbox since moving in.

Later in the video you’ll see a close encounter with a beautiful, harmless (but very camera-shy) golden orb-web spider, which was a good reminder that not everything in the yard is as scary as it first seems.

She also mentioned she’s been feeling a bit down lately and said seeing the yard transformed would really lift her spirits. More than anything, she was excited about finally having a safe space where their kids could come outside and play.

So, the goal for today was simple — open everything back up and give this family a backyard they can finally enjoy.

By the end of the cleanup, the yard was completely transformed, and the tenants now have a space where they can relax, spend time outside, and let the kids play safely.

We also take a look at a beautiful piece of Australiana in the yard — the Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris). Over about five to seven years this fascinating native tree develops its distinctive bottle-shaped trunk, storing water to help it survive dry conditions. Once it forms that shape it almost looks cartoonish, like something straight out of a Dr Seuss book.

Even though the yard needed a lot of work, this tree is definitely a keeper.
