The flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans) is one of the ocean’s most fascinating fish. Despite its name, this unusual species doesn’t actually fly, but it can spread its large, wing-like pectoral fins that make it look like a creature from another world. Found in the warm waters of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, the flying gurnard uses its fins to startle predators and to “walk” along the seafloor while searching for food.
