Surrounded by mountains and olive groves within the Serranía de
Ronda, close to the village of Jimera de Libar and the beautiful and
historic town of Ronda, lies Finca Luna Luz. This is a unique
property built to design by a master stonemason and bricklayer. A
traditional Andalusian cortijo built with meticulous care using local
natural materials, the result is a house of rare distinction and warmth,
set in two and a half acres of private almond groves and wildflower
meadows.
The Tour
The house is reached along a secluded country lane leading up a hill,
which culminates in a private, gated driveway in turn leading up to
the house, with ample parking for several cars. The façade of the
house is shaded by trees and wisteria and a porch above the front
door.
The house was built from the ground up by the owners of the
property themselves in 2001. The only building on the land was the
old stables, now renovated into a separate self catering casita.
The main house is horse-shoe shaped and composed of a single story
base course with a second story in the central part of the house,
which is disposed around a central shaded courtyard. All materials
are locally sourced, from the stone to the exposed wooden beams
inside.
The same care has been taken inside, where pine and chestnut doors
have been handmade in traditional methods and the terracotta and
handmade tiles have been laid in imaginative designs. The layout is
set over one story, with two bedrooms, one bathroom, kitchen and
study at ground level, and a third bedroom on the second story at the
center of the house above the sitting room.
The entrance hall is in the east wing of the house and is tiled with
traditional terracotta, which extends through the remainder of the
house, and leads through a brick tunnel into a second hall, and an
archway entrance to the warm sitting room and the farmhouse
kitchen beyond.
The two ground floor bedrooms are to the left and right of the
entrance, with the door to the second story bedroom ahead to the
left. The bedroom on the right with french doors out to the central
courtyard boasts the same high ceilings and exposed beams found in
the wings at either side of the house. The bedroom to the left is at the
back, with a stable door on to the shaded gallery that runs behind all
of the house and its own private outside space with cooling water
feature. The bedroom on the second floor has a wooden floor and
lower ceiling also constructed with a lattice work of exposed beams,
and the same floor space as the living room below. All bedrooms are
en-suite.
Back in the hall and through the archway into the warm sitting room.
An imposing stone fireplace is the central focus of the room, which
looks out towards the french doors opening out onto the wide central
courtyard and the expansive views down the valley.
A twin archway at the other end of the sitting room opens out onto
the generous farmhouse kitchen and dining area, the true heart of the
house. Worktops are crafted from granite and wood, with handmade
traditional wooden cupboards and exposed corner shelving. The
beautiful pitched high wooden ceilings found in the wings of the
building are employed to good use here, lending the room a sense of
space and light. The west wing also houses a guest bathroom and
study, with french doors out to the courtyard.
From the kitchen, out through the back door and onto the patio.
Shaded by a thatched wooden pergola it contains a barbecue area,
with comfortable low seating and ample space for a dining table.
From the patio and looking to the back of the house, there is a utility
area and tool shed along the terracotta tiled gallery running along the
back of the house.
The casita
The old stables have been converted into an open plan guest casita.
The thick stone walls and columns belie its rustic origins, its aspect
and hydrolica tiled terrace taking advantage of the extraordinary
views from the finca, with the mountains to the east and the white
village of Cortes de la Frontera ahead, . It has a self contained
kitchen, outside shower and compost loo.
The grounds,
The property is set in an almond grove, which bursts with blossom
in the late winter and yields sweet almonds in late summer.
There is a mature mediterranean garden surrounding the house with
a herb garden at the back near the kitchen. At one end of the finca,
near the gate, we find the lush kitchen garden and pond, shaded by a
weeping willow. At the other end of the finca there is a pergola and
fruit tree grove, planted with lemon trees, nectarines and apples.
