Quando usiamo l’imperfetto indicativo in italiano?
- Per descrivere cose, persone e situazioni nel passato (es. Quando avevo 10 anni ero alta, avevo i capelli castani e mossi).
- Per descrivere stati d’animo ed emozioni nel passato (es. Ieri non mi sentivo bene).
- Per parlare di abitudini nel passato (es. Da piccola andavo sempre in vacanza al mare). In questo caso usiamo anche espressioni come “normalmente”, “di solito”, “sempre”, “regolarmente”.
- Per parlare di un’azione nel passato con una durata indeterminata (es. L’anno scorso non parlavo bene italiano”).
- Per un’azione prolungata nel passato che viene interrotta da un’altra azione (es. Quando Maria è entrata in casa Sandra guardava la tv).
- Preceduto da “mentre”: a) per un’azione prolungata interrotta da un’altra azione (es. Mentre Sandra guardava la tv Maria è entrata in casa) b) per due azioni prolungate nel passato (es. Mentre Sandra guardava la tv, Maria leggeva un libro).
- Nel passato per le età (es. Quando avevo 15 anni) e le ore (Quando Marco è tornato a casa erano le 8)
- Nell’espressione “Non lo sapevo!”
- L’imperfetto si può usare anche per chiedere qualcosa in modo gentile nel presente (es. Volevo sapere quanto costano queste mele)

When do we use the “imperfetto” in Italian?
- To describe things, people and situations in the past (e.g. Quando avevo 10 anni ero alta, avevo i capelli castani e mossi).
- To describe mood and emotions in the past (e.g. Ieri non mi sentivo bene).
- To talk about habits in the past (e.g. Da piccola andavo sempre in vacanza al mare). In this case, we also use expressions such as “normalmente”, “di solito”, “sempre”, “regolarmente”.
- To talk about an action in the past with an uncertain duration (e.g. L’anno scorso non parlavo bene italiano”)
- For a prolonged action in the past- which was interrupted by another action (e.g. Quando Maria è entrata in casa Sandra guardava la tv).
- Before “mentre”: a) for an action interrupted by another action (e.g. Mentre Sandra guardava la tv Maria è entrata in casa) b) for two prolonged actions in the past (e.g. Mentre Sandra guardava la tv, Maria leggeva un libro)
- In the past, to talk about ages (e.g. Quando avevo 15 anni) and time (Quando Marco è tornato a casa erano le 8)
- In the expression “Non lo sapevo!”
- The imperfetto can also be used to ask something politely in the present (e.g. Volevo sapere quanto costano queste mele)
