Parallel crossings are still catching some drivers out — but the rules are clear, and the consequences of getting it wrong can be serious.

A parallel crossing combines a zebra crossing for pedestrians with a cycle crossing alongside it. They are designed so people walking and cycling can cross side-by-side safely, without needing separate stages.

Under the Highway Code:

Rule 195 states that drivers MUST give way to pedestrians waiting to cross at zebra crossings.

Rule H2 reinforces that those walking and cycling crossing or waiting to cross have priority over turning traffic.

At parallel crossings, this priority explicitly includes cyclists using the cycle side of the crossing.

There is no ambiguity here. If a pedestrian or cyclist is on the crossing, or waiting to cross, drivers must stop.

Failing to do so isn’t a minor error. It puts vulnerable road users at immediate risk of serious injury and can lead to:

Prosecution for careless or dangerous driving

Fixed Penalty Notices (points and fines)

Court action in more serious cases

Life-changing consequences if someone is injured

A cyclist hit on a crossing has no protection. A pedestrian struck at low speed can still suffer catastrophic injuries. What might feel like a moment of impatience behind the wheel can permanently change someone’s life.

Parallel crossings are not “new” priority invented to annoy drivers — they exist to make roads safer, more accessible, and easier to cross for everyone, including children, disabled people, and older residents.

As with all crossings, the rule is simple: slow down, look properly, and be prepared to stop. Those few seconds of waiting are insignificant compared to the harm caused by failing to give way.

Road safety only works when everyone follows the rules — especially those operating the heaviest and most dangerous vehicles.
