The third studio album by Finnish heavy metal band Mausoleum Gate, Space, Rituals and Magick, released on November 14, 2025 by Cruz del Sur Music, represents a milestone in the sonic evolution of Kuopio's sextet. After an eight-year hiatus since Into a Dark Divinity (2017), the group returns with a work that balances the classic essence of 70s and 80s heavy metal—inspired by influences such as NWOBHM, heavy psych rock, and progressive touches—with a bold reinvention, marked by a cosmic and mystical energy that permeates all the tracks.
The album is an invitation to an epic journey through fantastical realms, where space intertwines with ancestral rituals and dark magic. The production highlights the masterful use of keyboards and organs (courtesy of Wicked Ischanius), which function as the main instrument, evoking spectral and psychedelic atmospheres—think mellotron, Hammond, and Moog creating ethereal layers that guide the listener through a cosmic vastness. The twin guitars of Count L.F. and Jari Kourunen deliver elegant riffs and melodic harmonies, while the rhythm section—with classic bass lines and ferocious drumming—drives the album's anthemic momentum. Jarno Saarinen's theatrical and high-pitched vocals, with a narrative and expressive tone reminiscent of 70s Ozzy Osbourne, add a narrative warmth, making the lyrics of mystical and occult lore even more engaging.
Highlights include the opener "Vision Divine," a scaling and captivating anthem that blends space rock with dark metal; "Lucifer Shrine," with its infectious groove and references to bands like Black Magick SS; and the epic "Sacred Be Thy Throne," which unites the old and the new in a grandiose progression, with organ touches reminiscent of Vincent Crane (Atomic Rooster). The title track encapsulates the spirit of the album: a carnal and celestial fusion, janky in the best sense, celebrating the malevolent and the epic—something rare and captivating in contemporary metal.
Compared to acts like Saracen, Angel Witch, Ashbury, or even Tarot and Hällas, Mausoleum Gate creates an expansive and textured sound, but with an earthy and welcoming Finnish identity. It's an album that rewards repeated listens, ideal for fans of traditional heavy metal with progressive and psychedelic touches. In short, Space, Rituals and Magick is not just a triumphant return; it's a masterpiece that solidifies the band as one of the most unique and compelling in the genre. Available on CD, vinyl (gatefold edition with poster) and digitally via Bandcamp.
