Phillip Sear plays a piece from the second volume (1876) of a set of pieces called 'Nachklänge' (Echoes), by the German composer Heinrich Hofmann (1842-1902). The first volume is his Op.34.

Born in Berlin, Hofmann was well-known in his lifetime for orchestral works and operas. He is mainly remembered today for shorter piano works, some of which are still used for educational purposes.

This piece is prefaced by a verse from a poem with the same title by Karl Wilhelm Muller (1813-94), translated by J Powell Metcalfe:

"From the depths of ocean upward swelling,
Sounds the evening bell so faint and low,
Of that wond'rous ancient city telling,
Whose grey walls beneath the water glow."
