It's estimated that 1 in 10 people will have a phobia in their lifetime, but having treated and cured thousands of phobias during our careers as therapists, we have identified the four causes of a phobia. Severe phobias can have a very detrimental effect on people's mental health and quality of life, rendering some people housebound. For many who don't have a phobia, it can be hard to relate, quite simply because they haven't had the learning. By definition, a phobia is an irrational fear, and thus can be difficult to rationalise what is irrational.
