In Praise of Ulster (Back Home In Ireland).

'Back Home In Ireland' was a 1946 film by Ulster actor, folklorist, singer & writer Richard Hayward. This is a presentation of the majority of that film. In it, Hayward shows a visiting American G.I. around Ulster and shares with him the influence that Ulster-Scots had on the history of the USA. In turn the soldier tells of the warm hospitality that the people of Ulster extended to the American forces.

During WWII over 250,000 American troops were based in Northern Ireland. During the 18th century around the same number of Ulstermen & women departed the north of Ireland to make a permanent home in the American colonies.

'In Praise Of Ulster' was a book written by Richard Hayward in 1938. Although born in England, he grew up in Larne, Co. Antrim. Hayward was a lover of all things Irish. His movies, records & books were popular all over Ireland. He was also an Orangeman. He was credited for being the first to make audio recordings of many Orange tunes. His movie, 'The Voice of Ireland' (1936) was the first 'talkie' produced in Ireland, and another movie, 'Devil's Rock' (1938) was the first movie to be fully produced in Northern Ireland.
