Описание к видео AERO INDIA 2021: Big update on NETRA AEW&C MarkII | Netra to perform maritime surveillance role

Why we need AWACS?

The modern era air warfare is evolving from a dog fight to a electronic warfare. The airforce with better RADAR, electronics & avionics will have the upper edge. The AWACS has a key role in this and has emerged as the 21st century "Eye in the Sky". AWACS are the flying radars with an extended range. They can detect the movement of fighter jets in enemy territory from border areas without even violating the enemy airspace. These can also be used for maritime surveillance role. India is already operating P8I Poseidon jets that can not only detect submarines but can hunt them down with torpedoes.

The IAF currently operates two indigenously-built Netra and three Israeli-Russian-made PHALCON early warning aircraft. However, looking at the present challenges India is looking for additional aircraft to address the surveillance vulnerabilities along the Indo-Pak and Indo-China borders. The current plan is to build six more AWACs at expected to cost roughly Rs 10,5000 crore.

Netra AEW&C:

The DRDO's Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS) is a project by DRDO to develop an airborne early warning and control system for the Indian Air Force. It is also referred as NETRA Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS).

It is a force multiplier system for detecting & tracking of enemy/hostile aircrafts/ UAVs. It also enables to identify, assess the threat and take actions to guide interceptors for neutralizing those threats. The system is fully net centric, with complete command and control functions with two way communication link between ground and airborne operators. As a command centre, it enables onboard operators to select, command and guide specific interceptor aircrafts towards enemy threat efficiently and neutralize them.

Features & Specifications:

The present Netra AEW&C is built on Embraer ERJ145 airplane. The Netra has an active electronically scanned array (AESA) primary radar with IFF. IFF enables to differentiate between the friendly and hostile jets. It has two radiating planar arrays assembled back to back mounted on top of fuselage in an AAAU(Active Antenna Array Unit). It provides a coverage of 240 degrees.

The system will also have ESM (Electronic Support Measures) and CSM (Communications Support Measures). The Datalinks & SATCOM (Satellite Communication System) has been provided between the AEW&CS, fighters, and ground-based control systems. The aircraft will also have a comprehensive self-defense suite. The avionics suite will be linked via a data handling system, controlled by Mission computers.

The Netra AWE&C is also capable of mid air refueling and infact its the first transport aircraft of IAF to have this capability.

Enhancements:

Learning from the Netra AWE& C program, DRDO is working towards its Mark-II variant and multi mission aircrafts. It is going to have a budged radome for Maritime surveillance Radar. Its existing AESA Radar is also going to get upgrade to an extended range of over 450KM and ability to detect low observable targets such as drones and stealth fighters. This will add additional capability to Netra to perform even maritime role.
