The Swiss War of 1499 - In this war the Swiss Confederates fought against the House of Habsburg-Austria and the Swabian Confederation. The Swiss Confederation's cruel and costly victory underlined its independence within the Holy Roman Empire.

The short but fierce Swiss-Swabian War in 1499 was triggered because the Old Confederation refused to join the Swabian Confederation in 1488 and to comply with the decisions of the Worms Reichstag in 1495. After seven months of bloody conflict, the Peace of Basel was sealed between the Confederates and the Austrians in 1499, which exempted Switzerland from the Imperial Chamber Court and from imperial taxes. The Austrians then viewed the Old Confederation as a de facto independent political authority. However, the hostility between the Confederates and the Swabians was to last well into the 16th century and beyond.
