It’s just after midnight on a humid summer night in South Philadelphia. The block is quiet. But then, in an instant, gunfire erupts—a barrage so sudden and relentless, it leaves the whole neighborhood frozen in fear. Doorbell cameras pick up the chaos: people running for cover, shouts echoing, bullets flying. Fourteen shot. Three left dead. It’s another night in a city fighting a war with itself.
This wasn’t just another random act of violence. According to neighbors, the shooters seemed to know exactly who they were after. Some say it’s all tied back to the growing gang rivalries in Philly—beefs that start on social media and spill into the streets, leaving innocent people caught in the crossfire.
On July 7, 2025, at 12:57 a.m., officers responded to reports of a person with a gun on the 1500 block of South Etting Street in Philadelphia. When police arrived, they found multiple people shot. Three were killed: Zahir Wylie, 23, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.; Jason Reese, 19, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at 1:31 a.m.; and Azir Harris, 24, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the back and was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m.
Nine others were wounded. A 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and ankle. A 17-year-old male and a 24-year-old male were each shot in the left arm. Another 19-year-old man was shot in the left arm. A 23-year-old woman was hit in the left elbow, left thigh, and right calf. A 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were also shot, but their injuries are not specified. Another 17-year-old male was shot in the left arm. A 19-year-old man was shot twice in the head and remains in critical condition.
Police say several shooters opened fire on the block before fleeing the scene. Surveillance video shows chaos as victims tried to escape. Authorities are searching for multiple suspects and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Among those killed was Azir Harris, 24, who had survived a previous drive-by shooting in 2019 that left him paralyzed. This time, he did not survive. The other victims, Jason Reese and Zahir Wylie, were both young men from Philadelphia. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone who recognizes the shooters in the video to contact homicide detectives.
