Today’s Workshop: Discussing how to use a heat box to store and infuse oils. Learn how to make a salve or a balm. Understanding the ratios, carrier oils and wax.

This tutorial is for educational purposes. My focus is discussing the making of bath and body products and filling in the gaps to the best of my knowledge.

INFUSION BOX:
Box size: 38 x 12 x 13.5
3/4" pre-finished plywood

Seedling Heat Mat Thermostat Combo lightly warms infusions. Temperature control heats in minutes and powers off when it reaches the desired temperature. The controller turns back on when it drops in temperature. Holds approx. 14 infusion jars.

Butchers Broom Herb (Ruscus aculeatus)
A short, hearty evergreen, low shrub with greenish-white flowers, native throughout the Mediterranean region. Used to cleanse cutting blocks due to the stiffness of material.
Has been known in folk medicine as a natural healing herb to assist with temporary relief of inflammation, hemorrhoids, circulation, leg cramps, rash, hives, skin irritation, darkness of the skin, darkness around the eyes, bug bites, athlete's foot, itching, antifungal properties, smoother skin, tone and ease puffiness.
Butchers Broom is intended as a supportive herb for temporary relief. Those with chronic conditions should be under the care of a physician. There are no known side-effects with the use of Butchers Broom Herb for the skin. Not to be ingested. Herbal preparations and Folk medicine traditions are used to promote balance and harmony within the body, a sense of connection to what the earth already provides.

DISCUSSION:
Research Comedogenic and Non-comedogenic oils
Study the benefits of herbs
Check expiration of the oils you are using
Create your recipe
Infuse your oils
Decide which wax is best for your recipe
Gather supplies
Test 2 oz. of oils for proper texture of your salve or balm
Maintain proper documentation of your recipe and results
Label your product

NON COMEDOGENIC: Oils that do not clog pores rating scale 0-2 while COMEDOGENIC 3-5 AVOID these oils for acne prone skin. Good for dry skin. 2 is moderately low. Look for alternatives for your oils and butters. Change Coconut oil with a comedogenic rate of 4 to Babassu Oil of 1-2. Change Olive oil with rate of 2 to Rice Bran which is still a 2, but lighter weight. Shea Butter of 2 to Kokum butter.

ABSORPTION RATES OF CARRIER OILS EXAMPLE:
1- Very fast absorption: Hazelnut, Rosehip, Grapeseed
2- Fast absorption: Apricot Kernel, Camellia, Moringa, Safflower, Grapeseed
3- Average: Sweet Almond, Argan, Babassu, Hemp Seed, Jojoba, Olive, Pomegranate, Rice Bran, Sunflower,
4- Slow: Avocado, Coconut, Sunflower,
5- Very Slow: Borage, Castor, Flax Seed,
NOTES IMPORTANT: If creating a recipe using non-comedogenic oils, check absorption rates of those oils to see if they will work with your products characteristics, such as viscosity, penetration, speed, rub-in time, what the product will be used for, message oil, salve, perfume, cream etc.
Both non-comedogenic oils and absorbency must work together. Research any oil you prefer for these answers.
