The Punjab government has announced free bus and rickshaw services in Lahore for three days during Basant celebrations, aiming to promote public safety and reduce traffic accidents. The free transport facility will be available on February 6, 7, and 8.

The Provisional Information Minister Azma Bokhari said the initiative is intended to discourage people from using motorcycles during the festive days, as bike-related accidents usually increase during Basant. She said providing free public transport would help citizens move safely across the city while easing traffic congestion.

The minister also shared that the government is considering allowing limited kite-related manufacturing from December 30, but under strict rules. She made it clear that metallic strings, chemically treated thread, and any dangerous kite-flying material will remain completely banned to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Azma Bokhari said all kite manufacturers, sellers, and suppliers will be required to register with their respective Deputy Commissioners. Any violation of the rules could lead to cancellation of registration, heavy fines, and even imprisonment. She added that strong action, including long-term jail sentences, would be taken against those involved in illegal kite flying or selling without official approval.

Clarifying safety measures, she said only cotton-based thread would be allowed for kite strings, and the use of more than nine strands in a single string has been strictly prohibited to reduce the risk of accidents caused by sharp or reinforced threads.

Meanwhile, representatives of civil society welcomed the move, saying that a well-regulated and safe Basant could generate employment and attract tourists to Lahore. They added that such an event could also help revive the city’s cultural identity.
