Large Flocks of Starlings Fly to their Roosts

You can currently observe a fascinating natural spectacle again: huge flocks of starlings in the evening sky. Although the first smaller swarms form in early summer, the closer autumn approaches, the larger the swarms become. Their maximum numbers are reached here in September and October, shortly before they fly to their winter quarters in southern and western Europe. Around sunset, the birds can be seen in impressive flocks of clouds in the evening sky before they descend to their roosts. During the flight, the individual birds orientate themselves on up to seven birds in their immediate surroundings and always try to maintain the same position. When changing direction, the typical synchronous, wave-like movements occur, which make the swarm itself almost look like its own large organism. This impressive phenomenon is not only beautiful to look at, but also has an important purpose for the animals. In such a flock the birds are significantly better protected from flying enemies than alone.
