What is Ovulation?
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from one of the ovaries. In a normal menstrual cycle, this happens each month. Ovulation is the fertile time frame in the female cycle but, it is a time-sensitive process as the ovulated or released egg only has up to 24 hours to achieve successful conception.

When do you ovulate?
The first day of a woman's period is day 1 of the menstrual cycle. The length of the menstrual cycle is the duration from the 1st day of your period continuing up to the first day of the next period.
If you have regular cycles of normal length from 21 to 40 days. Ovulation is most likely to occur around 10 to 16 days before the next expected period.

How to know if ovulating?
Now that you know the most probable days of ovulation. Let's go over different methods to know when you are ovulating.

Methods To Detect Ovulation
1. Cervical Mucus: The consistency of cervical mucus under hormonal influence changes throughout the cycle.
a. In the days of periods, cervical mucus may not be noticeable. In the days after periods have stopped the cervical mucus changes from dry or sticky in consistency, then to a creamy texture. And close to ovulation under estrogen hormone influence, it appears as a wet egg like texture which is favorable for sperm survival and is indicative of approaching ovulation. Therefore, being a favorable time to achieve conception.
b. After ovulation, the cervical mucus becomes sticky and thick under progesterone hormone influence. Until menstruation starts again.

2. Basal Body Temperature Charting: For this method, you will need a digital thermometer or basal thermometer able to accurately detect a small difference of 0.01 C or 0.10 F in body temperature. Basal body temperature (BBT) is your body's temperature at rest as when you first wake up in the morning. Take the temperature at the same time each day before getting out of bed. Record the results on a chart. Before ovulation, the basal body temperature averages between 97°F (36.1°C) and 97.5°F (36.4°C). After ovulation, it rises to 97.6°F (36.4°C) to 98.6°F (37°C). This slight increase of 0.3 to 0.6°C in temperature is due to the increase in progesterone hormone. By identifying this temperature rise it can help you to identify your ovulation.

3. Ovulation Kits: Is another method to detect ovulation which relies on Luteinizing Hormone which drastically increases in concentration and triggers ovulation. The ovulation kits detect this LH levels either in urine or saliva depending upon the kit. You can start using the ovulation detection kit 5 to 7 days before the expected days of ovulation. If the kit returns a positive result indicates that ovulation will occur in 24-36 hours which represents the peak fertility window.

Signs and Symptoms of Ovulation
Ovulation Pain: Cramps or pain may be experienced by 20% women occasionally and not in every cycle. This mild pain is experienced as the egg ruptures and is released by the ovary. It can be the left of the right ovary depending upon which ovary releases the egg.

Breast Tenderness is another symptom that can be experienced right before or after you ovulate in response to progesterone hormone.

Heightened Sense of Smell is another symptom that can be experienced around the time of ovulation.
