Venice, Los Angeles - February 22, 2024. Along Lincoln Boulevard and Rose Avenue in Venice, a coordinated initiative between the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. is underway, aimed at addressing the homeless encampment situation. This effort is part of the city's ongoing commitment to effectively manage homelessness and maintain high standards of public cleanliness and health.

Dressed in white hazardous materials suits, workers executed the cleanup operation with adherence to rigorous safety measures.

Forty-eight hours prior to the operation, the city had disseminated notices informing the community of the impending cleanup and urging the removal of personal belongings from the designated areas. The notices clarified that items left behind would be collected by city personnel.

Homeless individuals were afforded a 15-minute period by Los Angeles Sanitation to move their belongings before the commencement of the cleanup. Law enforcement officers supported in relocating individuals from the cleanup areas, while sanitation workers handled the removal of unclaimed possessions.

The operation demonstrated a synchronized effort between the Department of Public Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc., with personnel donning yellow and orange vests respectively. Their primary focus was on differentiating hazardous from non-hazardous waste, guaranteeing a comprehensive cleanup.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) played a vital role in providing outreach services to the homeless population during the operation.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved, especially the homeless community, was a priority for the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers concentrated on upholding cleanliness, hygiene, and safety protocols.

Notably, despite the enforcement of camping ordinances that limit certain activities in public areas, no citations were issued throughout the cleanup process. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Los Angeles to confront the issue of homelessness, signifying a dual focus on immediate actions and the exploration of long-term solutions to address the underlying causes of homelessness and offer essential support to those affected.
