In a healthy hip joint, the ball (femoral head) fits securely into the socket (acetabulum). In DDH, this ball-and-socket structure is poorly developed, leading to instability. If not addressed, children may experience:

Limping or uneven gait

Hip pain in later years

Strain on the knees and spine due to misalignment

Symptoms and Warning Signs

Parents should be alert to early DDH symptoms, which may include:

Uneven leg lengths

Limited movement of one leg

Clicking or popping sounds in the hip joint

Asymmetry in thigh or buttock skin folds

Early recognition of these signs is crucial to prevent long-term disability.

Diagnosis of DDH

Simple imaging tests can help confirm the diagnosis:

Ultrasound – useful in babies younger than 6 months

X-ray – more accurate in older infants and toddlers

Treatment of DDH

Dr. Mandar Agashe emphasises the importance of early treatment. When DDH is detected before 6 months of age, it can often be corrected with a Pavlik harness, a non-surgical device that holds the hips in the correct position for healthy development.

However, delayed diagnosis often requires surgical options such as:

Closed reduction under anaesthesia

Open surgery to realign the hip joint

Bone procedures involving the pelvis or thigh bones in severe cases

The earlier DDH is identified and treated, the better the outcome.
